When GoldRush ephemeral keys are enabled, your browser holds the socket itself: it asks this server for a 30-minute credential and dials the hypercore edge directly. Until then one server-side socket fans the feed out over SSE. Either way there is no polling loop, and questions that cost credits (a wallet, a candle, a market universe) go through cached, allow-listed proxies so a thousand viewers cost what one does.
